I don’t know how much you read about the latest “New” steam locomotive “Tornado” it has some amazing facts! I didn't realise that one of the governing factors, on steam engines, is the amount of water they could can carry? Therefore there was an option to pick up water “On the run” a water scoop was lowered into a trough, between the railway lines, and water was scooped up into the tanks! The scoop has been left off the new engine and the water tank increased from 5,000 to 6,200 gallons. The consumption of water for the "Tornado" is between 40 – 45 gallons PER MILE!! Therefore the 6,200 gallon water tank should give a safe 100 mile none stop journey. There are plans to have another tank of around 8,000 gallons in the first carriage at a later stage. The coal carrying capacity is also a governing factor but modern techniques allow further for less so the fuel carrying capacity has been decreased from 9 tons to only 7.5 tons. The overall weight, of the engine and tender, is in excess of 160 tons and it should do 100 mph towing up to 11 carriages which will be about 500 tons loaded! Total weight 660 tons! The original engines had pulled up to 15! carriages but now limited to 11. Tornado is the 50th of its class and the originals were all built since I was born and they have all been scrapped! Most had a lifetime of only about 15 years! Diesel took over!
